Back when I was growing up in Northern California, I took a rabid interest in sports. Just ask my mother.
Often I would read to her, while she was trying to accomplish something else no doubt, whole articles out of Sports Illustrated. It didn’t take long to fall in love with the written word – when it came to sports – for a young fan of the San Francisco Giants and the Golden State Warriors.
Moving to New Mexico, one of my first memories was hanging out at the first Clovis Holiday Basketball tournament. I was a teenager with nothing to do, a teen that enjoyed watching sports it must be emphasized, and here was a place where I could buy a tournament pass and sit in the stands and watch game after game after game after game.
And I did. With a coke and an order of nachos in the upper bleachers. What a great way to spend my time, I thought.
After a decade of covering high school sports, primarily for the Albuquerque Journal, I wanted to put the two loves together in the summer of 2009. With the help of like-minded sportswriters & photographers, we’ve been assembling what we hope will be a site like no others: One that has a wide scope, but also has a local emphasis as well.
In order to keep this as a free site, we’ve enlisted the support of local sponsors. So when you see an advertiser on a school page, for instance, remember that it’s thanks to these folks that we’re able to keep this project going forward.
Also remember, if you see any errors, feel free to let us know. There’s pages and pages and pages of information and it’s a top priority for us to get it right. If it’s wrong, we can correct it.
And if you have any photos of the years past – say, of a state championship team – we would love to use them.
