Past Tourneys for the Colts…



The town of Silver City is more than acquainted with the heartbreak of reaching a title game and finishing second (it’s happened 15 times). But the pain for Silver fans has also been eased by numerous state crowns as well.

2005…After suffering through seven runner-up finishes on the gridiron, many by close margins, the Colts finally win the big one. Class 4A championship: Silver 27, Aztec 20

Girls Basketball
2000…Led by senior Julie Whetten, Silver soars to first girls hoops title by beating perennial power Kirtland Central, 60-57, in the Class 3A finals

Boys Basketball
1996…More than two decades without a title had passed when Colts and coach J.J. Marrujo capture 3A crown with a 75-57 victory over Albuquerque Academy
1975…First championship for Silver Colts, led by coach Marv Sanders, after beating NMMI 64-62 in the Class 3A finale

Winners of the Class 4A team title in 2009, Silver has had plenty of past victors in the individual tournaments that are used to determine overall champs. From 1994 to 1996, in fact, Colts wrestlers Adam Borrego and Rusty Cook each won three titles in a row. Later, from 2004 to 2006, Silver’s John Paul Maynes repeated the three-time championship run.

2012…Colts average 13.5 runs in first four games of tourney, then claim second straight title by edging Portales 4-3 in the 3A finals
2011…Led by pitcher Annmarie Rascon, Silver allows only one run total in five playoff games and races past Portales 9-0 for the Class 3A blue trophy

1998…Silver’s best success has been on the softball field and a 1-0 shutout of Bloomfield in the Class 3A championship caps three-in-a-row run
1997…Coach Larry Trower’s troops pop Artesia 8-1 to finish off 21-2 Colts’ season with the 3A crown
1996…After a one-year absence at the top, Silver beats back Bloomfield 7-5 to earn the blue first-place trophy in Class 3A
1994…Colts, coached by Eric Gutierrez, edge Artesia in a 9-8 battle for the school’s first softball championship

1997…Diamond bragging rights in Class 3A belong to Silver and coach Claudie Thompson when Colts beat St. Pius 6-4 in the title contest

1988…Let’s hear it for Rene Benavidez, the lone Silver individual tennis state champ after he wraps up the Class 1A-3A tournament with a finals victory
