Overtime Old-Hat for victorious Spartans

Bernalillo wins quarterfinal over Goddard with PK shootout

Though only a sophomore, Bernalillo keeper Claudia Delara has gotten pretty used to this thing called the penalty-kick overtime shootout. And that’s especially true in the season-opening Artesia girls soccer tournament.

Just as they did twice last year in Artesia, the Spartans survived yet another OT by outlasting Goddard 2-1 to move into the semifinals. The game was played Friday morning and Bernalillo quickly had to remotivate for a contest with Carlsbad later that day at the Mack Chase Athletic Complex.

In the overtime session, Goddard (0-1) held a slight advantage after Asha Chechani made a shot and Bernalillo’s Shayla Colton hit the right post. But Bernalillo goal keeper Claudia Delara then stopped cold an attempt by the Rockets’ Katie Hillman and momentum swung back in the direction of the Spartans.

Bernalillo (1-0) got three straight makes from Tilley Smith, Allyson Hurtado and Cristina Cervantes while two of the next three Goddard players in the shootout missed the goal box altogether. When Alysha Bolduc’s attempt went too high, the Spartans celebrated the quarterfinal victory.

“We practiced those too, just before we came out here, so the girls practice their PKs pretty often,” Bernalillo coach Larry Baca said.

“Last year, when we came here, the same thing happened (against Artesia and Silver). I was pretty nervous, of course, but I knew I had already been in this situation before,” said Delara, who did think her PK stop did effect the mindset of the remaining Goddard shooters. “I think it might have got in their heads, the one that came right to me.”

The Spartans struck first when frosh Nataly Mijares, after being centered the ball by Marissa Valencia, scored midway through the first half.

After intermission, however, it was Goddard that put more offensive pressure on the goal. With 26:30 left on the clock, Ali Davis got the ball in front of the Bernalillo goal and shot past Delara to tie the game at 1-1.

The Rockets continued to get good shots off for the next 15 minutes, unable to connect on any, until Davis went down with an ankle injury with 11:11 remaining.

Neither team had good opportunities over the last ten minutes as the game headed to the PK shootout – which was instituted for this tournament by organizers for time reasons.

“Normally, we have two 10-minute overtimes and then the PKs. But in this tournament, they decide how they want to do it,” Goddard coach Betty Elizondo said. “We kind of had a little talk at halftime and the girls picked it up and played a much better second half than the first half.

“Our scoring chances went down (after Davis exited), because we had to sub in one of my newer girls, who hasn’t played a whole lot,” Elizondo added. “That’s OK. We take these tournaments as learning experiences. The girls decided to take it one game at a time. I said, ‘Well, let’s learn from it.'”
