New Mexico Military Institute is often in a unpredictable position, not knowing exactly who’ll be on a particular squad or who will be eligible, thanks to the ever-changing makeup of the corps of cadets. Among the many outstanding athletes was one who went on to earn college football’s highest individual honor.

1965…For the second time in three years, the Colts and coach Marshall Brown take away the Class A state gridiron title with a 33-0 shutout over Deming
1963…While former student Roger Staubach is at Navy earning the Heisman Trophy, back in Roswell, New Mexico Military Institute is winning its first state title: NMMI 3, Belen 0

2002…Colts prove ’01 was no fluke as NMMI captures the Class 3A championship again – this time with an 8-4 win in the finals against Cobre
2001…First title on the diamond for the Institute as coach Charlie Ward and the Colts edge Lovington 5-4

New Mexico Military Institute has forged itself into a power on the tennis courts over the years, primarily with the boys. Back in 1974, the Colts’ Mike Maloof was best at the Class 2A-3A state tennis tournament. Then, in 1979 and 1980, it was
Staci McCaffery won back-to-back Class 1A-3A singles championships on the girls side.
Back to the boys, Cyril Jacobe won two straight in 2001 & 2002 while fellow Colts Sergio Lopez and Kyle Lynch were best in the state in 2005 and 2006. Most recently, in 2012, NMMI’s Freddy Sanchez won the 1A-3A singles championship.
