Logan gets it done in EPAC opening round

Longhorns coach says improvement is needed for future wins

By Karl Terry

It wasn’t exactly what the Logan Longhorns were looking for but it was a win, as they downed Grady 50-42 in the first round of the EPAC Tournament at Melrose.

“We played ugly,” Logan coach Billy Burns said.

His team controlled the scoreboard throughout the night but burns said his team’s play wasn’t consistent enough if they expect to continue to advance in the tournament.

“At times we played well, at times we played sluggish,” Burns said. “You’ve got to be playing your best basketball of the year to win this tournament. We’ve got to be ready for Floyd or they’ll beat us.”

Logan meets No. 3 seed Floyd at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

For Logan’s players the win was a relief.

“It was pretty exciting,” said Longhorn junior Brandon Rafool. “I’m just glad our team won. I really do think we have a shot at winning the tournament and going on to state.”

Grady made a run late in the fourth quarter to pull as close as they would get. Broncho senior Jarod Allen hit a 3-pointer with 4:20 to play and then a few minutes later hit a pair of free throws to close the gap to six at 46-37. Rafool answered with a trey of his own and Grady couldn’t recover.

Grady coach Jim Kneipp said he was at a loss for why his young team never got untracked.

“I told them before the game they wouldn’t do anything we hadn’t worked on in practice, and they didn’t,” said Kneipp.

Kneipp said his team was having problems clearing the boards and gave Logan lots of second shots. He said he was impressed with his team’s defense at times.

“We did a good job defensively drawing charges,” he said.

Rafool led all scorers with 18 on the night. Longhorn sophomore Tanner Sorrels had 9.

Grady freshman Trenton Jones led his team with 14 while junior Dustin Provencio had 11.
