King’s Gate youth no match for Foxes

Fort Sumner romps over 8th-grade inundated roster

Someday, King’s Gate Academy in Hobbs might just be vying for district titles against the likes of Tatum and Gateway Christian. That may be awhile as the school goes through the sometimes lengthy process of seeking accreditation with the State of New Mexico.

Legitimately contending with powers like Fort Sumner, the defending state champ in Class 1A, might be a long ways off too.

The Foxes totally overwhelmed the young Lions 82-19 and will play Dora in the next round.

Fort Sumner (6-4) was led by 14 points each from Reed Kenyon and Caleb West while teammates Kolter West and Dax Moyer each contributed a dozen more.

King’s Gate (0-6), a late substitution when Grady and House combined to form a single team, was paced by Marvin Bonilla’s 10 points. Bonilla is only one of two seniors on the Lions’ squad – which has eight 8th-graders as its core.

“I’ve got two returning players, who have been with me the last three years,” King’s Gate coach Nijoy Oliver said. “Pretty much the others are all new. It’s kind of like pulling teeth right now, getting them with the program of what I’m trying to do.”

A large amount of the scores from the floor, at least for Fort Sumner, came via fastbreak layups – the result of turnovers as the Lions often struggled just getting an attempted shot.

Senior 6-foot, 1-inch post Rawley Stallard started the parade of baskets with one in the opening moments, which was quickly followed by a putback shot from Skylar McMath and an old-fashioned 3-point play by Kolter West.

By the time, Bonilla connected on a shot – to enthusiastic cheers from the King’s Gate rooting section – the Lions were already down 11-0. At the end of the first quarter, Fort Sumner held a 23-2 advantage.

“I guess they’re not expecting teams to come out playing as hard as they are,” the Lions’ coach lamented.
