 Nestled in the southeast quadrant of the state, near the Texas border, the Tatum Coyotes have often wielded a powerful influence in New Mexico high school sports.


Check out the titles in the Roll Call of State Championships…


2003…A perfect 12-0 Tatum season is culminated by a 57-40 shootout victory over Melrose in the 6-man state championship game
1988…Three-in-a-row titles for the Coyotes, which edge Springer 10-7 for Class 1A’s top honors
1987…Coach Kerry Scott leads Tatum back to the top for a second year in a row as Cloudcroft is beaten 27-14 in 1A championship
1986…Coyotes hand Melrose only loss of the season and wrap up first football title in 30 years with a 21-0 shutout
1956…It’s called Class C at the time and Tatum is the best in the state for that division after a 7-0 victory over Kirtland in the title contest

2011…Three straight Class 1A crowns for Tatum after a 3-1 victory over Melrose in the last match of the year
2010…A rematch of the ’09 championship match and Coyotes prevail again – this time in four games over Fort Sumner

2009…Sixth title overall and fourth for coach Mike Majors when Tatum edges Fort Sumner in five games for the 1A crown
2005…A stellar undefeated season for the Coyotes, who cap 27-0 season by beating back Jal 3-2 in finale
1995…Winning a three game sweep over Roy in the 1A championship, Tatum takes home second state title in a row
1994…First title for coach Mike Majors when Coyotes beat Roy in four games for state bragging rights
1987…Tatum, led by coach T.L. Brooks, overcomes Texico 3-1 in title contest for icing on a 19-3 season
1976…In the early days of state volleyball tournaments, Coyotes and coach Linda Fowler sweep Animas in best two-out-of-three

Boys Basketball
2000…It was a long time comin’, but Tatum – led by coach Curt Stephens – takes home first boys hoops state title with a 65-58 victory over Cliff in 1A championship

Girls Basketball
1988…Coach Harvey Wilson leads Coyotes to title game, where Tatum wraps up 27-2 season by whipping Capitan 63-46
