And now, a word from our Sponsor…

Glenn Johnson is used to competition.
As former head coach for the Portales High football team, Johnson patrolled the sidelines as the Rams vied with all comers.
Then he got into an entirely different kind of competitive venture – albeit one with quite a tasty fringe benefit.
These days, when Johnson isn’t coaching, he and a couple of other teachers at PHS are cooking.
Barbecueing, to be exact.
At J-4 Bar-B-Que, the guys spend hours to prepare the meats before cooking them up for hungry patrons throughout the east side of the state.
“We start at least a day-and-a-half to two days ahead. That’s when we start smoking the meat,” said Johnson of J-4′s menu that includes brisket, chicken, sausage, pork, turkey and more.
The idea to make a passion into a business came when Johnson, Bill Graham and Jerry Faber took a trip to be in a barbecue cook-off in Rio Rancho.
“Oh my, is it intense or what?” said Johnson of the annual “Pork & Brew” competition. “I tell you what, you think you know how to barbecue, you should go up and compete with those guys.”
Since each man on the trip has a part of his name start with a “J”, along with Faber’s father-in-law who was along for the competition, they came up with the J-4 concept.
Portales residents in need of some good catering have been grateful ever since.
“With barbecuing and catering, it’s just as easy to cook for 400 as it is for 40,” Johnson said. “You’ve still got to prepare the meats, the sides and the drinks – the whole bit.”

Since J-4 Bar-B-Que was created, the company has catered weddings, funerals, baby showers, reunions, graduation parties and retirement parties – among others – in Eastern New Mexico and West Texas.
Johnson himself if from Olton in the Texas panhandle.
“It’s been a passion of mine I guess ever since I was a kid,” said Johnson of barbecuing. “My dad introduced me. It’s kind of funny – at a very young age, junior high age, we have a big family with nine of us and I’d be the one that was stuck on the grill.

“As far as preparing for large groups, I guess I’ve done that for years,” he added.
