And now, a word from our Sponsor…

Lately, the word Der has made a comeback in the advertising campaigns for Wienerschnitzel nationwide – as in, the food is “Der-licious.”
In Clovis, Wienerschnitzel on Main Street has always been known as “The Der” to locals and is now over 40 years old in serving hot dogs to the community. In 1968, Jim and Laverne Hailey opened Wienerschnitzel in Clovis and the business has remained a family affair all these years later.
Sons Jim and Mike Hailey are to be found serving der-liciousness these days while another son, Doug, and daughter Lendra have also lent a hand on more than one occasion.
“It’s been 25 years since they took the Der off (the business name), but Clovis people have never changed,” Jim Hailey says. “They’ve been very, very good to us.”
The chili cheese dog is, appropriately enough, Wienerschnitzel’s top-seller in Clovis. After all, it was only a handful of items on the menu back when the store was opened. Sharing the billing with the chili cheese dog was “Der Pot of Beans,” the Polish sandwich and soft drinks.
Now, the list of choices has increased dramatically for the business that’s been known by Clovis teenagers for decades as the spot, while “dragging” Main Street, where it’s best to turn around and head the other direction.
Corn Dogs, French Fries, Hamburgers, Chicken sandwiches, Pretzel buns for hot dogs, Tastee Freez ice cream, Pastrami Dogs and much more now dot the menu.
The Haileys’ store, tabbed as one of the top five franchisees in the country by Der executives, has contributed their own specialty to the selection. It happened when someone had the idea of dishing an order of chili cheese fries, Wienershnitzel’s second-best seller, into a hot dog bun.
The reaction was favorable and, voila!, the Hailey Special was born.
“That’s one of those things that has grown throughout the country where most Wienerschnitzels will make you one now,” Jim Hailey says. “Some call it a Hailey Comet, a Hailey Special, a Hailey Dog – they call it everything.”
At Clovis High and Eastern New Mexico University ball games, Wienerschnitzel is a constant presence.
“All the tournaments, whether it be volleyball or basketball or whatever, we try to fix ’em up and help out as much as we can,” Hailey says.
