1986…Highland wakes up the echoes by winning first title in over 20 years. Class 4A championship: Hornets 14, Roswell High 7
1965…An undefeated season for Hornets and coach Bill Gentry as 11-0 campaign closes with 13-10 victory over Hobbs
1963…A 20-0 shutout over Las Cruces High caps a perfect 11-0 season and brings Highland the first-place hardware
1954…Led by coach Hugh Hackett, Hornets hand Artesia a 20-0 setback to claim Class 2A state championship
Boys Soccer
1991…Fourth crown for Highland after a 2-1 victory over Eldorado in Class 4A title game
1989…Hornets face old coach Larry Waters and prevent his new school from an outright championship: Highland 0, La Cueva 0
1985…A narrow 1-0 win over Academy brings Hornets Class 4A bragging rights and second overall title
1981…First state boys soccer tournament in New Mexico and it’s Highland, guided by coach Larry Waters, that beats Eldorado 3-1 in championship
Boys Basketball
1972…Eight times, the Hornets have finished second in boys hoops. This was the championship year. Class 4A title game: Highland 57, Albuquerque High 55
Girls Basketball
1982…Lone girls title on the hardwood comes when Highland handles Hobbs 75-61 in Class 4A finale
Baseball
1987…A few months after grabbing football title, Highland triumphs on the diamond with a 9-8 victory over Farmington in championship
1959…Eight years after first, Hornets and coach Mickey Miller get another title by beating Carlsbad 9-3
1951…Highland proves its best in baseball across New Mexico by capturing first state championship in that sport
Softball
1981…Hornets own a blue first-place trophy in softball, thanks to a convincing 7-1 win over Manzano inClass 4A championship
Tennis
Highland has state tennis winners a-plenty, including three-time singles champ Ted Russell (1962-64), two-time winners Mike Huffman (1970-71), Tim Russell (1968-69) and Joe Ferguson (1951, 53) as well as many other victors – Mark Kiel (1985), Curtis Neeld (1977), Bill Thompson (1967), Cary Huffman (1965), Rusty Ball (1958), Jack Kennedy (1956) and Glenn Kempers (1954). In girls play, Carol Neeld had a stellar three-year reign over Class 4A by winning the 1978, ’79 and ’80 titles. Almost 30 years later, Kepra McBrayer triumphed over the girls 5A field for the Hornets’ most recent tennis crown.
