There’s a great deal of pride in the valley near the Rio Grande River for one of the oldest schools in Albuquerque. Valley fans have had their yearning for state success satisfied in at least a few areas.

Boys Basketball
1996…First hoops title in over 30 years as Valley, coached by Jerry Snider, go to Las Cruces and capture the 4A crown with a 60-54 victory over Alamogordo

1965…Vikings capture championship on the hardwood for the first time after a 73-67 victory over Roswell High caps a 23-5 campaign

Baseball
1965…Future UNM coach Vince Capelli is at the helm at Valley, which beats Roswell High 7-4 in Class 2A state championship

Tennis
Valley’s first state tournament champ was on the tennis courts, back when Tom Culley won his way through the tourney draw in 1957. Later, in 1983 and 1984, Mike Velasquez brought back-to-back singles titles to Valley and, in 2011, Chris Humphries also grabbed the big schools boys crown.
Girls? Yes:  I
n 2008, Thamiris Rodriguez claimed Class 5A honors and became the first Viking to win the girls state championship.
